Intravesical Instillation of Oxybutynin Chloride in Neurogenic Bladder

Abstract
Intravesical oxybutynin chloride was administered to 12 patients with neurogenic bladder (8 suprasacral spinal cord lesions and 4 brain lesions) having clean intermittent catheterization. The indication for intravesical oxybutynin chloride
application
was persisting urinary incontinence despite clean intermittent catheterization. Therapy consisted with instillation of 5mg crushed exybutynin chloride in 30ml distilled water twice daily. Of 12 patients 9 (75%) became completely dry. Urodynamic
study
taken 1 week after beginning of the therapy revealed increases in bladder capacty(30-230ml) and decreases of maximal filling pressure(15-40cm H2O). None of the patients reported any side-effect after intravesical application of oxybutynin
chloride.
These results indicate that treatment with topical oxybutynin chloride is an effective alternative to treating detrusor hyperreflexia, especially in patients already on clean intermittent catheterization, but with persisting urinary incontinence
due to
dutrusor hyperreflexia.
